Twitter doesn’t sound like much. It suggests that you tell the world what you’re doing in 140 characters or less. So what? How are people using this social marketing tool to make more money online?
What You Need To Know: Follow and Be Followed!
The key to twitter is to follow and be followed. If you’re on the site talking about what you’re doing to nobody and not finding what anyone else is doing, it’s sort of useless and rather boring. Once you get a few followers and start following a person, that’s when the buzz starts. You can update your status on the web, via instant messaging client or via a third party tool like Twhirl that lets you use twitter from your own desktop. You can follow and be followed on your cell phone as well and be plugged in to the Twitterverse on the go.
You have a profile page that lets you manage the tool and lets people look you up to see what you’re all about in a few lines and with a URL. It’s the “What are you doing” section that counts.
Your Twitter friends or peeps (a.k.a your Tweeps) all carry on conversations with or without you and when you pop in and chime into various conversations, it gets rather lively. People ask questions, answer questions and share URLS of what they’re doing, what they find interesting and what they want opinions on.
There’s also the public timeline that tells you what other people are doing and you can search on that for more followers or conversations to eavesdrop on. It’s like a virtual water cooler that you can stop into during the day and check in with your tweeps.
Use Twitter when you:
- Post an update to your blog
- Want answers to a technical question
- Want to vent
- Want to tell people what you’re having for lunch (seriously, that can sparks some very interesting questions)
and more.
You can also send direct private messages as well as respond to people both directly but also publicly. The more interesting of a Tweet you post, the more likely people will follow you and re-tweet. A re-tweet is when you post a URL and someone likes it so they share it by tweeting or re-tweeting it to their followers. Do you see how it can become a benefit to you in an area like affiliate marketing, product launches and technical challenges you need help with?
You can also post Twitter feeds on your website so that people can follow you, read your conversations, see who you’re following and visit their posts or URLS so it becomes a very viral way to share and communicate and even to collaborate.
The downside to Twitter
Not only is the tool currently growing at such a fast rate that it goes down regularly but there is another downside and that’s productivity. Sadly there’s almost always a downside to social networking and bookmarking tools and as with many others, Twitter can be a time waster if you’re not careful so it’s important to use it and have fun but also to set limits for yourself.

6. Understand all of the ways you can benefit from Twitter. For example you can find new joint venture partners just by posting what you are up to in your internet business. Another way to benefit is outsourcing things you need done by posting a tweet for work such as blog articles, graphics, website design, and so on.

New Twitter Users’ Biggest Mistakes: How to Avoid Them

I am not usually a big fan of rules when it comes to social media, but I do think there are ways to make your experience using tools such as Twitter more beneficial to yourself and others. There are some common mistakes I see new users make that I want to share with you. The good news is, once you are aware of them they are really easy to avoid!
Mistake: Not using a real picture of yourself for your avatar.
When I first joined Twitter over a year ago I was guilty of using a cartoon-type picture of me for mine. I thought it was cute and it happened to be part of the design I had on my previous blog. However, I switched to an actual photo of myself a few months later, and more than a few people commented that they were glad to see the real me.
I feel the same about others now. A picture of you is a lot more personable than a picture of your dog or a company logo. People like to see your smile!
Mistake: Automating pushy direct messages for new followers.
Many Twitter users use a service such as TweetLater to set up automatic messages to go to anyone who begins following them. This is a bit controversial among people on Twitter. If you are automating a friendly message to just say thanks for following me, that’s one thing, but a message with a link to one of your products when we haven’t even connected yet is generally frowned upon.
Mistake: Starting to follow people without posting a couple of your updates.
It may feel like you are talking to yourself to do this, especially if you don’t have any followers yourself. But when someone comes upon your page and is deciding whether or not to follow you, they need something to go on. People are looking for some sign of life or personality.
Mistake: Not spending a good amount of time interacting.
There is nothing wrong with letting others know what you did last night or what your plans are for the day. Just be sure to intersperse your tweets with some two-way conversation. Ask questions, re-tweet others, reply to questions, comment on others tweets, etc. This builds community and keeps things balanced and interesting.
Mistake: Mass following right out of the gate.
My ratio of followers to those I am following is pretty even, mainly because I like to follow back most of the people who follow me as long as they don’t look like spammers.
However, I find it hard to follow others who, in addition to having only a couple of updates, are following thousands of people and have only a few people following them. It feels spammy, like they don’t have much interest in having a relationship or conversation with anyone.
Mistake: Doing everything from the web instead of using a Twitter client.
Installing a client such as Tweetdeck gives you more functionality than what you can do from the Twitter website alone. For example, Tweetdeck allows you to place people in groups which make it easier to keep track of them, especially once you are following lots of people. Plus, you don’t have to be connected to the web to use these types of clients. I find they make tweeting a lot easier and more convenient for keeping track of your replies, direct messages and followers.
Mistake: All promotion, all the time.
As I have mentioned in previous articles, no one likes to follow someone who is constantly selling and promoting without giving anything back. Keep things balanced and respect that others do not want to be pitched all of the time. That being said…
Mistake: Not leveraging Twitter as part of your business marketing strategy.
If you are in business and using social media, you are looking at Twitter as a tool to get results in that business, not to just socialize all day. Remember that it is a great way to reinforce your brand, form strategic alliances and build credibility and trust.

We may have heard of twitter marketing, but what do we know about it? What is it, exactly? How do we use it for basic marketing never mind promoting our real estate business? There are so many questions raised by this one little site that it’s hard to come up with just one broad answer, but here are the main ones.
The site itself is best described as a micro-blogging site. Micro in that you can only use 140 characters per post, blog-like in that what you post and write is viewable straight away. Pretty straightforward so far, right?
To view a post, you have to look for relevant keywords for what you are interested in such as in the case of real estate investing, you would probably be looking for private moneylenders. Then if that post by that person is of interest to you, you can become a ‘follower’ of the poster so you will automatically get updated when they post something new on the site such as updates on different lenders you could inquire with – and so it goes on.
Once you have found the niche that you are looking to follow, such as real estate buyers and are linked up with them, usually they will have started following your posts, it’s at this point that you can benefit from twitter marketing and use it to build your list of real estate prospects and promote your business. For example, you post a message about a certain property at a great short sale price, and everyone that is following you will see what you just posted. Within minutes, anyone searching for hot properties in your area will be alerted, and if it is something they want more information on, they will contact you. Remember it is about what’s happening now and this is what gives the system its greatest potential.

Tech savvy real estate agents understand the importance of using the Internet’s global reach to their advantage. They build informative websites that are optimized for search engines, they blog regularly, and have started to create profiles on various social networking sites like ActiveRain and Squidoo.
A relatively recent addition to the social networking sphere is Twitter, a place where you have only 140 characters to write something about your day, ask a question, or link to an article or website of interest. Some consider Twitter to be a place where users “micro-blog,” while others see it as more of a chat room with thousands of users ‘chatting’ all at once.
The original premise of Twitter was to provide a venue for people to post short, simple status updates; to answer the question: What are you doing? Users share stories about their pets, upcoming appointments, their moods, and much more. You can follow the adventures of other users, and accumulate followers of your own. You can direct questions and answers to specific people, or send out calls to everyone all at once.
The appeal of this type of technology baffles many real estate agents who’ve never used the service, but those who have stuck with Twitter see the benefits of this new type of networking.
Rather than trying to see Twitter as a revenue producer, it’s important to understand that Twitter is first and foremost a networking tool. Don’t be overtly promotional in your posts (known as “tweets”). If self promotion is your primary M.O., you’ll quickly lose followers. Users aren’t interested in being bombarded with spammy posts, so if you want to use the site to advertise your services, be very subtle and make sure that your personal posts far outnumbers the more professional ones.
While it may seem counterproductive to be laid back when you’re trying to promote your real estate business, you have to keep in mind the intention of social networking sites. They are meant for people to connect with others who share similar interests, or who live in the same community. The mood is casual and definitely more personal than your business website. Grammar and spelling rules are relaxed, and you can talk about the pizza you ate last night or the rotten movie you just watched. People following you will find your posts interesting because you’re being authentic.
The more people that get to know you and like you, the more opportunity you have to gain clients in the future. It’s the same as expanding your circle of contacts in the real world, and it can be invaluable for your business in the long run.
The idea of social networking being effective over the long term is critical to understand. Unless you are very lucky, you probably won’t gain any new clients right away, but you’re building a solid foundation of online friendships that may develop into business relationships.
In addition to being a vehicle for finding potential clients, Twitter is also a great venue for networking with other agents. You can share tips, ask questions, and refer clients to agents outside of your service area. Other agents will do the same for you. Building relationships with other real estate agents can be educational and emotionally satisfying, as they can relate to the stresses you encounter on a daily basis.
Twitter is free and it only takes a moment to create an account. Search your area for people with accounts, or see if anyone you already know has an account. You can start to follow their tweets and engage people in conversation. Soon you’ll have followers too, and you’ll begin to appreciate the possibilities that this kind of networking can offer. Be open-minded and creative, and soon you’ll see how you can make Twitter work for you and your realty business.

How DO You Network on Twitter Anyway?
Networking is one of the biggest buzzwords in the business world these days and with good reason. If you aren’t actively networking, you aren’t making those connections to your next business venture, your next client, and your next big (or small) windfall.
What is networking?
So what exactly is networking and how do you do it? You can find thousands of seminars, programs, masterminds,
insider’s groups and a hundred other “guru names” that will teach you all about networking for a super low, one

I’m going to let you in a little secret: Networking is simply a matter of getting out there and letting people get to know who you are. That’s it. All there is to networking is to meet the people. You really don’t need to wait for some super-exclusive big name expert to teach you how to network before you begin.
You learned it all in kindergarten: Play nice, share and make new friends.
Based on its exponential growth, Twitter is the number one place to get out and network. All you need to do is
create a Twitter account, maybe look at a few twitter tutorials and start using it. Use your business name or your real name for your Twitter username and upload a real picture of yourself. Plug in the link to your site or blog and create a quick little bio that tells folks who you are and what you do.
Next, post a few tweets saying hello. Offer up a pearl or two of wisdom relating to your expertise. Then, start
following people. Don’t know who to follow? Use Twitter search (the link is at the bottom of your main page) and
type in a keyword or two describing the topics you’re interested in.
For business, it’s often easiest to begin by following people in your own field. Type in your industry and step back while you watch the results start pouring in. Click on the usernames you see and start checking people out until you find some you like, then follow those people and start interacting.
Do NOT go on Twitter and start posting link after link about your business.
Instead, share some of the insight and wisdom you have about your business. Good, juicy, useful information. Just give it away! Heck, it’s only 140 characters, you can spring for it. Share links to great stuff you find on the web. Cut and paste someone else’s post with “RT” in front of it. This is called a Retweet and it’s an easy way to share and make new friends. We all love to be re-tweeted because it makes us feel important and special.
Yes, there are all kinds of tips and tricks to using Twitter (and other networking sites) effectively for marketing your business. A lot of the teleseminars, books and programs are worth every penny you pay for them, some even more. However, you don’t need even one of them to get started using Twitter to network for your business.

Hi my name is Tom and I am a 40 year old married father of four and I have been hearing for the last several months about TWITTER.It is all over the news as well as the internet. Twitter is one of the fastest growing services in the web and with celebrities joining in it is sure to take off. Most people who are new to the service has one major problem , That is deciding who to follow . Most of them join the service because some famous celebrity is already on Twitter but there are many ways you can use service. Deciding who to follow depends largely on what you are going to use the service for. If you are interested in getting news alerts then your better off following CNN or any other major news network. If you are interested in getting the latest activities of your favorite actor or actress then you can use the service to do that. You can even use it to stay in touch with your family, well you have to get your mom dad and wife to use it first.
Some people are using it as a medium to share things that are related to there day to day lives. For example if your a journalist then you can use Twitter to share an interesting article or a web page almost instantly via the service. The cool thing is because it limits your message to 140 characters you are automatically forced to be precise and concise with your messages. Advantage of this is if you are getting lots of tweets you can easily go through them without much of a hassle.
As you can see whom you follow on Twitter depends entirely on what is your purpose of using the service, Most marketers are using it because it gives them a tremendous advantage over other in doing sales and generating traffic to there website and sales pages. The thing to remember is if you are going to use it as a marketing tool be careful about spamming your feed with affiliate links.

Twitter has been called micro-blogging, or blogging for ordinary people. Basically they have provided a way for people who don’t want a full fledged blog to post about their daily happenings.
The downside to Twitter is the amount of people who sign up and make a post, but then never return. Currently these abandoned accounts are never deleted, so it’s up to you to update your follower and following lists keeping them clear of these abandoned accounts.
Finding Followers:
Besides being able to add your friends and email contacts to Twitter, they also provide a handy search box to help you find people to follow.
One of the best ways to get followers is to follow others first,. There is one check you must do before adding someone to your list, the most recent post date. Just adding thousands of people to your twitter list will not bring you followers. Twitter received a lot of buzz and attracted a lot of tire kickers, but if you aren’t paying attention then you could easily end up with the majority of your list being people who haven’t logged on to Twitter for a months, and they won’t be coming back to check out your profile anytime soon.
So step one to a clutter-free Twitter is to follow the right people. I will search for a particular term, and flip through the list, signing up to follow only people who have posted in the last 7 days. Also I will not follow anyone on their first post, I want to make sure they will be coming back on a regular basis.
Culling The List:
As your lists grow, you will want to check your following list and un-check those who have not posted for a while. I like to use a 30 day rule. Every time I log on to Twitter, I check 5 to 10 people in my list, and stop following the ones who have not made a post in the last 30 days. Many people don’t post every day, or even every week, but chances are if they have not posted in the last month, they probably won’t be posting again.
Following Followers:
Step 3 is returning the favor. Whenever you log in, check your follower list to make sure you are returning the favor to everyone that is following you. Unless they are just spamming the Twitter system with affiliate links posted every couple of minutes, there is no reason not to give back.
Posting With Links:
When writing a post with a link, whether to your site, an affiliate link, or just something cool you found, there is no need to place a full URL. Just using the www.sitename.com format will automatically make a clickable link.
While affiliate links are okay, try to post valuable content as well. Just putting up a bunch of obvious affiliate links will lose your following.
